Documenting Gas Gathering Pipelines

New regulations from the federal government require almost all gas gathering pipelines to be fully documented starting May 15, 2022 per PHMSA rules. This requires documentation and compliance for over 400,000 miles of previously exempt pipelines. The government’s justification included numerous examples of death and destruction from failures of existing gathering pipelines.

Performing this documentation will be time consuming and require justification of whether the line is to be kept in operation or abandoned. The documentation required is extensive, but mostly straightforward.

Documentation requirements include (not fully inclusive):

  • Detailed mapping.
  • API RP 80 determination and explanation for each pipeline.
  • Determination of MAOP.
  • Determination of area classification.
  • Safety buffer identification.
  • SMYS and hoop stress.
  • The design formula (all components) used for the pipe.
  • External stresses on the pipe.
  • Corrosion components and status.
  • Testing methods.
  • Incident reporting.
  • Documentation of valves and other connections to each line.
  • SCADA displays.
  • Public awareness.
  • Welding methods.
  • Numerous API, ASME/ANSI, ASTM, NACE, NFPA, PPI, and other standards.

I have worked with most of these standards in developing pipeline reporting and monitoring methods in the past and am available to assist clients with documentation of their current and/or new pipelines. I am also able to assist with innovative and standardized solutions to normal oil and gas challenges at very reasonable rates.
